This August I will be travelling to Mexico as part of an Earthwatch Team to study the methods being used to save the flora and fauna of the Xochimilco Wetlands. Specifically, studying the chinampas an the effects that urbanization has had on their microhabitats. I hope to become familiar with the threats to wetland areas and effective methods for managing these threats which can be applied to protecting our own wetlands here on the Gulf Coast. I will cover my journey in several blogs. This blog covers the readings and videos I am reviewing prior to my expedition early August.
Here is more information about the Earthwatch Expedition
Here is more information about Fund For Teachers which is sponsoring this expedition and MANY other teacher study programs this summer

This was a great read! Really engages with the locals in several important Gulf Coast ecosystems and tells a much larger and historic story beyond BP's contribution to the environmental threats to our wetlands. While disheartening at first, Jacobsen offers some real solutions to saving our wetlands.
